SUMMER TO AUTUMN

The mornings are getting colder and the nights are coming sooner. You already know it’s time to pack up the sun dresses and get out those sweaters but there’s more to switching your closet over! Here are 10 useful tips I came up with to help you feel better about what you already have and hopefully make shopping for the upcoming season a little bit easier!

10 Important things to remember when switching your closet from Summer To Autumn:
  1. Neutrals are your BEST friend. They will never betray you, they will always compliment you, and they get along soo well with the rest of your closet. Neutrals carry over season to season but Autumn is their claim to fame.

  2. Plaid is still Fab. One thing I hope never goes out of style, plaid and flannel. Dress it up or dress it down. Layer or simpilize. Skirt or button down. It’s still cute.

  3. Boots. NOW. Whether you rock knee highs or little booties, now is the time to whip them out of the closet or splurge on a new pair. Just remember, getting the pair that’s a little more pricey will benefit you in this situation. Because if you’re like me, these need to last until at least February. But how great is it walking around in snow with the soles of your boots cracking and peeling off? Higher end boots will serve you well.

  4. Sweaters will always be the Sweetest. Have you ever had an item of clothing more forgiving than a sweater? Probably not. (And if you have I neeed to hear about it.) Sweaters look fantastic on every body type if you disagree with me on this one, I promise I’m right.

  5. Don’t quite quit whites. Whites and creams are praised in the winter. Just because Labor day is over doesn’t mean it’s time to pack those up. Sorry Stacey London, I just don’t agree with you on this one.

  6. Layers on layers. I mentioned this one before, but realized it was so important that it needed it’s own number. This is also where neutrals come in handy because layering+neutrals= warmth, style, and it’s much easier. Also NEVER disclude dresses from layering. Some of my favorite outfits came from layering the most random things over boring dresses. It sounds messy but trust me, it was incredible.

  7. Hold off on the shopping spree. I know I know, all the stores switched to fall and you’re ready to buy everything. But I promise you’ll be so much more grateful if hold onto that paycheck for just 2 more months (or less) when they bring out their winter collections. Autumn always is shorter than we expect or wish so save your money for the longest season of the year.

  8. Flow Mo’. Flowy dresses, shirts, kimonos, pants, basically everything. That’s the key to this fall. Easy right?

  9. Leather is sticking around. You’re in luck! Leather is here for yet another fall season so don’t pack up those leather pants. They’re definitely still in style. Try changing up what you wear with them. Sweaters are always a good fallback but BE ADVENTUROUS.

  10. Accessories. Ok last but definitely not least, accessories can easily make or break an outfit. and in the wise words of Coco Chanel, “Before leaving the house, a lady should look in the mirror and remove one accessory.” We want to simplify. Focus more on the clothing and less on adding every piece of gold jewelry that semi matches. Stick with your favorite statement bracelet and smaller earrings. Let your whole outfit do the talking instead of all your dangling accessories!

GLOWING ON THE OUTSIDE AND THE INSIDE

Hello gorgeous, so today I want to talk all about highlighters and illuminators. These are one of my most favorite beauty products on the market.  I CANNOT live without them!

Using them draws attention to your eyes and other parts of your face. They are crazy simple to use yet they can make such a beautiful difference to your makeup routine.

Throughout this post I will explain how I use highlighters and where you can pick up my favorite ones. Then at the very end I’ll talk about something even cooler than highlighters.
The trick to highlighting and illuminating is the placement of the product. Where you place the highlighter will allow you to control how “glowy” you want to look. If you want a more natural and subtle look, only place the highlighter at the top of your cheekbones. To apply the product you can use your finger or my favorite way to apply it is with a fan brush or the elf blush brush ($3, Target).

Now if you want to go all out with the highlighter you can place it in several different areas. In the picture below you can see where I like to put my highlight.  I place highlighter on my cheekbones, the inner corner of my eye, under my brow, above my top lip, and down the bridge of my nose.
Picture
There are several different highlighters to suit every woman’s wants and needs.
Picture
First, are the Natural highlighters. These give a very subtle, healthy glow from within. These highlighters work best for girls going for a natural look. They are also my best friend when I am doing bridal makeup.

My favorite product for a natural highlight is all of the Hourglass Ambient Lighting powders. These can be found at Sephora and can range from $20-$50.

Next are the more dramatic highlights (my favorite).  These give the most glamorous glow whenever the light hits your face. I have quite a few favorites for this.

My very favorite is the Becca Pressed Shimmering Skin Perfectors in Moonstone (for fair to light skin) or Opal (medium to tan skin tones). These are the most gorgeous highlights in the world. You can use them as an eyeshadow and a highlighter. They can be purchased at Sephora for $38.

Another great highlighter is the Mary Loumanizer by the Balm. This can also be used as an eyeshadow and is very intense. (Amazon $21)

For my girls on a budget Elf Pinktastic blush which is only $3!  Bonus? it is an amazing highlighter and also a perfect dupe for the famous MAC soft and gentle highlight.

Okay so now that we have talked about how to get that artificial glow let’s’ get to the important stuff aka the “inner glow”.

Do you know how important you are?! Like really, you are the most important thing to the most powerful being in the universe. YOU have a unique light in yourself that no one on this planet can replace. Whether it be your talents, your character, your kindness it can be anything. But you have been blessed with something inside you that this world NEEDS you to share.

Take time to think about what talents or attributes you have been blessed with and please don’t waste them! Share them with others.

Never forget, true beauty does not come from makeup; it comes from within.

Thanks for reading beautiful!

xoxo,
Alexa

HOW TO HANDLE THE HATERS

This summer, my husband and I filled up a storage unit, packed a few suitcases, and moved to San Francisco. We knew almost nobody here and were initially homeless - it has been the greatest adventure! But our time here has been littered with hardships - ranging from loneliness, to just plain unfamiliarity. The biggest hardship, surprisingly, has been learning to respond to hate.

I started a brand new job, wide-eyed, excited, and ready to learn, and was immediately hit with a wave of dislike and negativity - most of it stemming from my religion and stereotypes associated with it. I was so taken aback by the mean jokes and rude questions that I often just stood silent, unaware of how to react.

After a few days (and a few waves of tears), I called a girlfriend and complained about the teasing. "These people are SO mean, I would never treat anyone this way." I told her. Moving to a brand new place had really shaken my confidence, and so the hate had really shaken me to my core. I decided that they were all callused jerks, with their pre-set opinions and their dirty mouths. I decided I would transcend their bad behavior.

Although that wasn't the worst approach, my cold exterior prevented me from making relationships with anyone at work. Sure, their teasing slowed and didn't hurt as much, but I had isolated myself by passing judgment on them and deciding that they were just mean.

Shutting myself off emotionally still didn't make me happy - and so I prayed for strength with my situation. Miraculously, I slowly started to feel a measure of love for my co-workers! I started to forgive them for their harsh remarks, for the way that they made me feel initially. I started to respond to their criticism with smiles, and then the criticism just went away.
Picture
I started to notice parts of their personalities that I genuinely liked. Asking questions helped me learn more about their lives and who they were underneath the exterior. I was able to compartmentalize our differing views and appreciate each person for their wit, their good habits, or their help. I even began to consider some of them my friends. Work became enjoyable! I realized that my first impression wasn't necessarily representative of their personalities.

Were they mean? Yeah, they were. But nobody is out of the realm of forgiveness, and if we are willing to forgive, our lives can be 110% easier.

Sometimes people ARE just mean, and it's not always realistic to expect that, in time, everyone will come to love you. But I think if we give people a few extra chances, and pray to truly find love in our hearts for them, that we can learn to love everyone - EVEN our haters.

MEET THE BE WISE BEAUTY EDITOR

Hello beautiful, I am Alexa (BE WISE, Beauty Editor) and I love romantic walks down the makeup aisle. I am a beauty product junkie and I spend much of my spare time learning the best (hair, makeup, skincare) tips and tricks. Currently, I have one of the best jobs as a make-up artist, because I get to make women feel confident and beautiful every day. I am also a business and marketing major with a goal to get my law degree.

You may be wondering why would I be a part of BE WISE if I love makeup and beauty products so much? Because that is totally not what this magazine is about. The answer? - I joined BE WISE because I wanted to start a different type of beauty blog that wasn't so fixated on outer beauty. My goal is to talk about inner beauty (confidence, kindness, self-worth, goal setting, loving yourself, etc.) just as much.

I will be combining both topics for beauty posts for your face and your mind. But let's be real no amount of makeup can mask an ugly heart, true beauty comes from within!

Name: Kayla Clark Stastny
Home: Colorado, Utah, and San Francisco
Passionate about: passion! I love seeing people's eyes light up when they talk about something they love, and I think passion is the greatest quality we can have in order to be our best selves.
I love TV journalism, good books, sucking all of the adventure out of each day, city skylines, and art in all of its forms, and my sweet husband. I am happiest when I am actively working towards being a better person, in every aspect. I believe that we can learn so much from each other and help one another in our quest to become the best we can be - and that's why I love contributing to be wise. I am a firm believer that every person has something good to offer, I believe in working hard and playing hard, and I believe that we chose our own happiness. I am a member of the church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

A few random facts:
1. I am constantly getting mistaken for other people, celebrities, etc. (it happens at least once a week). I have come to the conclusion that I just have a generic looking face.
2. I would rather read a book than watch a movie, any day.
3. All injuries I have sustained have been "blonde moments" - running into a pole and getting a black eye, tripping over my feet and breaking my ankle, etc.
4. I have really terrible FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out), I love being in the center of all the fun!
5. I played with Barbie’s until I was 13 and made my mom address me as "her princess and queen." luckily the girliness faded out a little over the years ;)

WHAT IT TAKES TO LOVE YOUR BODY

8/4/2015

We've all been there: wishing that we looked like a celebrity in a magazine or that girl we saw at the gym. We all get that icky, guilty feeling when we're shopping for new clothes and it seems like there is nothing in the entire mall that fits! It's frustrating and it's a feeling that leaves you feeling empty. But it doesn't have to be that way.

Throughout my years of weight loss and weight gain, body loving and body hating, I've discovered a few important keys to being truly and honestly comfortable in my skin. When I find myself beginning to have negative thoughts about my body, I ask myself these questions:

Am I eating the right food?
Now, this doesn't mean restricting all sweets and treats and it doesn't mean going on a crazy, absurd diet. It's means that of all the calories I eat in a day, are the majority of them full of vitamins and nutrients? A treat is definitely okay every now and then, but when you eat healthy your body feels so much better and it's easier to love it.

Am I exercising daily?
"Exercise" is a tough word for some people to swallow, but it doesn't have to mean going for a jog or lifting weights. Getting your body to move and grow stronger should be the main goal of every workout. Don't like running? Try a Zumba class. Not the biggest fan of cycling? Yoga can make you sweat just as much. Just get up and get moving! Exercise helps you to realize and appreciate all the amazing things your body can do.

Am I getting enough sleep?
I am a busy, on-the-go, can't-say-no, nonstop, college student with a husband and a lot of bills. My days are packed from the second my alarm goes off to the moment my head hits the pillow. But my body and my mind need the irreplaceable rest that comes from a good night's sleep. When I neglect the sleep that I need, I'm tired and sluggish. I get frustrated with my body for not being able to do more for me, but in order to get the most out of my body it needs to rest. It's easy to love my body when I feel awake and refreshed.

Am I dressing for my body type?
Try as I may I will never be a size zero (and there's nothing wrong that! There is also nothing wrong with those of you who are a size zero). That being said, I need to find clothing cuts and styles and fabrics that best fit my body. There is a difference between cute clothes and flattering clothes. Lots of trends are cute, but they don't flatter my body type. Sticking to clothes that flatter your body type, whatever it may be, will help you feel more comfortable in your own skin.

In the end, when I am taking care of my body, I love and appreciate it more (even if I didn't reach my ideal weight or if I'm not as strong as I'd like to be). There is so much my body can do and I'm so thankful for the one I was blessed with. Taking care of my body helps me feel my best and let's me be the best I can be.

Head Fashion Editor.

That should get me some rad street cred right? First of all, I just need to say how grateful I am for the people I’ve met to get involved with this amazing company three cheers for BE WISE.

Ok, I’ll tell you guys a little about myself I guess, I was born into a beautiful family of 9 which has since grown to a family of 14. (Not pictured: sister serving an lds mission in germany and newborn niece).
Picture
We’ve lived in American Fork Utah my entire life until this point where I am currently living in Suva, Fiji. I’m 18 years old and was born into the LDS church (lds.org). I have loved the girliest of things for as long as I can remember and I’m not ashamed to say I’m obsessed with shopping bags and lipgloss.

I graduated from cosmetology school June 2015 where I also earned my advanced makeup artist certificate. Plan is to attend the Fashion Institute of Technology in a few years and follow my dreams to New York City. (but we all know how those “plans” go, deep sigh) I’m hoping to inspire everyone that reads this to begin feeling more comfortable in your own skin and starting a revolution to change the ideas of beauty from the photoshopped, skewed, world’s opinion, to realizing that we’re already where we need to be and to embrace whatever size shape or form we’ve been given. I’m in deep infatuation with this beautiful world and all it has to offer. I hope I can convey that somehow via our two computer screens.  xoxo Jolene Renee
